New BSTDB Secretary General Assumes duties

Following a proposal of the Government of the Hellenic Republic, the BSTDB Board of Directors appointed Mrs. Orsalia Kalantzopoulos Secretary General of the Bank as of 16 March 2011, for a period of 4 years. Mrs. Kalantzopoulos is replacing Mr. George Kottas.
Mrs. Kalantzopoulos joined the BSTDB after a long career at the World Bank. She joined the World Bank in1984 as a young professional and after successive assignments as Economist at the Development Research Department and Senior Country Economist for countries in the Africa and South Asia regions, she became Assistant to the President and the Managing Directors of the World Bank Group and then was promoted to Advisor to the Managing Director for Operations and Strategy in 1995. In 1997-2002 she served as the World Bank Country Director for the Caribbean and initiated the Regional Disaster Mitigation Program supported by an innovative multi-country lending instrument. In 2003-2009, in her capacity as Country Director and Regional Coordinator for South-East Europe, Ms. Kalantzopoulos was responsible for the World Bank’s country relations and policy dialogue and coordinated the implementation of regional programs in environment, energy, infrastructure, health and education sectors. In 2008-2009 she served as Regional Director for Central Europe and the Baltic Countries where she spearheaded lending and technical cooperation programs, as well as budget support operations in countries hit by the global financial crisis and strengthened partnerships with European institutions. In July 2009, she assumed duties as Senior Advisor to the World Bank's Vice President for Financial and Private Sector Development, where she was supporting the World Bank's overall strategy for responding to the global financial crisis with a special focus on commercial bank supervision, stress testing and financial sector regulatory reform, while leading operational teams for catastrophe risk insurance for climate change.
Prior to joining the World Bank, Mrs. Kalantzopoulos was a research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, an economist at the United Nations Secretariat and a Senior Economist with General Motors Corporation.
Mrs. Kalantzopoulos holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and Masters degrees in Regional Development as well as Economic Theory from the University of Pennsylvania. She graduated magna cum laude in Economics from the Athens School of Economics.
She is fluent in English, French and Spanish.
Mrs. Kalantzopoulos is married to Christos Mastroyannis, MD and they have two sons.
